This extremely rare postcard shows the Viper speedboat which was invented in 1906 by William Albert Hickman while he was living in Pictou. His story is a very interesting one and a fair amount of information can be found on line in several places. His patented "Sea-Sled" was the first to ride on top of the water much like today's speedboats and catamarans.

There are several good articles on the internet but the following write up at John & Susan Howell's family geneology pages, and their site provides information about his family and his life that does not appear in other places. http://jhowell.com/tng/getperson.php?personID=I3302&tree=1

The AZO stamp box on the back of this card dates it to between 1904 and 1918.

Postmark:
July 2, 1906 New Glasgow, NS & July 3, 1906 Andover, Massachusetts

This is a rarely seen card. The Torry's loved to get out and drive around the area and take photos, but so far I only know of 2 pastoral images that they published.

ID#: PC 0200
Photographer: Probably Torry family
Printer: Unknown Belgian firm
Publisher: Torry's Book Store, New Glasgow, NS

My father's research notes indicate that the above postcard was unusual in that it was reproduced from a drawing, rather than a photograph.

Addressed to Mrs. H. A. Dingwall, 285 Pearl Street, Cambridge, Mass, the writer notes merely that " New Glasgow is a fine place." It is signed Marion.

Mailed to Miss Rosie Cameron, News Office, Truro, NS, the sender notes that "This is better than Stellarton, don't you think! Wait till I catch you. Helen"

This is the only postcard I have seen of this view and it is the only one have seen that was published by this company.

Printer: Probably S. J. Hayward, Montreal
Publisher: S. J. Hayward, Montreal for Canada Railway News Co. Limited
Postmark: Unused card

This is the only Hayward published postcard that I have seen of Pictou County. It is not a particularly attractive postcard, and that is probably the reason this card is rarely found.

This view is identical to PC00600 shown directly above, which may have been published by the original photographer. It looks much better in colour. These two cards are the only ones that I have seen so could be considered rare.

A rather mundane photo, although I am probably judging by today's standards, of what was likely a relatively new highway at the time. As of Sept of 1933 there was only about 30 kms of paved road in Nova Scotia.

I would love to know the exact location of the mill that is shown in this very nice and very rare card. The East River does not look very deep at that location. The other postcards in my collection that have this back are all associated with the Crockett family of Hopewell and the Torry family.
